Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf
This is a tutorial on how to make a cute illustration of little red riding hood and the scary wolf walking down the paths in a forest. The tutorial was made easy to follow along, and to enjoy the beauty of drawing. Made in Corel Painter 4.
Step 1. Size
The first step to our tutorial is to have a good idea of our subjects' heights. I started by making litte red riding hood's height five circles tall. For the wolf, make him three circles tall. At first, it may look that the wolf is four circles tall and not three. This is only because he is moved up to look like he is behind little red riding hood.
Step 2. Shapes
Next, I started drawing in the figures with simple shapes. For red riding hood, draw her head as a circle with a larger circle around it with more space on the top. Then for her middle, draw a pentigon. The lower part of her dress is made form a triangle with rounded tips. Little red riding hood's boots are made of rectangles. The puffs of her dress are small circles on each shoulder. The left arm is drawn held over the stomach and the right is held close to the left hand.
The wolf has a circle for a head and two triangles for ears. Draw his mussle as a small oval. His upper left leg is a small oval with a small circle for the paw. Draw the right leg as a long oval. His right back leg is a curved oval covering most of his other back leg. Then add a half of a cresant for the wolf's tail.
Step 3. Draw in the lines
Now we start to draw in the little red riding hood and the wolf. Start to draw in the the lines. At this point it is good to try different styles to see what kind of feel you want your drawing to have. I went with a cute, yet dark look.
Step 4. Details
Now let's step it up! Now that we have a good feel for what we are doing, let's get creative. I added on a nice, flowing cloak to match the girl's hood. As I went along, I added little detail while sketching in little red riding hood's dress as well. For Mr. Wolf I gave his fur a little more fluff and a wider grin.
Step 5. Cleaning up
As I added in the detail, I felt the messy lines were to hard to bare. By cleaning up my art, it reveils flaws and needed areas of detail in the drawing. For example, by cleaning and smoothing the lines, I have made red riding hood's hair flow more natural adding more of a soft look to her.
